Lemon Balm Lips active ingredient is supported by a raft of published clinical data. The product is is pleasant and convenient to use and has demonstrable results. Lemon Balm Lips is a 1% formulation of Lemon Balm,( Melissa officinalis) leaf oil in a non-toxic, all natural lip balm. Lemon Balm leaf oil is a potent, clinically proven anti-viral, it’s proven virucidal action on herpes (cold sores and genital herpes) is fast and long lasting. The product heals lesions and most importantly, reduces recurrence.

Data shows the product increases the length of time between outbreaks, protecting cells from the virus. Published clinical data shows other products like acyclovir, decreases the length of time before the next outbreak; for sufferers this is life changing.

Summary of research into the use of Melissa officinalis (also known as Lemon Balm or Balm Mint) for the treatment of Herpes infections.

European research involving three double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trials show the effectiveness of a 1% Melissa officinalis cream for the treatment of herpes simplex viruses types 1 and 2, and herpes simplex labialis. These trials were conducted in Berlin at the Clinical Drug Research and Development Centre, in Frankfurt in the Centre of Dermatology and Venereology, the Dermatological Clinic in the city Hospital in Darmst, and the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology at the University of Heidelberg. (Refer – Journal of Phytomedicine Volume 1 Issue 1 pages 25-31 and, Journal of Phytomedicine Volume 6(4) pages 225-230) These trials involved the selection of patients with a history of recurrent herpes infection.

Key Findings

The 1% Melissa officinalis formula trialled is effective in treating herpes simplex viruses, type 1 and 2, and herpes simplex labialis. All of the trials showed that the formula significantly reduced the intensity of symptoms from a herpes simplex outbreak when compared with both the placebo treatment and treatment using other pharmaceutical products. -The healing period is shortened -The spread and size of the infection area is reduced -The intensity of symptoms; itchiness, tingling, burning, inflammation, tautness, blistering and swelling is significantly reduced. This was particularly so on the 2nd day of an outbreak when the symptoms and level of discomfort are usually at their worst. -There is some evidence to show that this treatment may increase the time interval between herpes simplex outbreaks.

Additional Data

If treatment with Lemon Balm is begun immediately infection symptoms appear the severity of the outbreak by day two is significantly reduced. -The infected area should be treated at least four times per day – In vitro tests show that Mellisa officinalis works by protecting uninfected host cells and their virus receptors from becoming infected by the herpes simplex virus, whereas other pharmaceutical treatments like acyclovir and idoxuridine are thought to slow down the virus reproduction, but do not protect the host cells from becoming infected. -the 1% Mellisa officinalis cream exhibits low toxicity with few side effects, but it is a very effective virucide -continuous use may prevent further infection outbreaks -because of Mellisa officinalis’s mode of action it is unlikely that Mellisa officinalis resistant strains of the virus will develop
